What the minimalist style is actually for
It is also the easiest style to do badly, because a page with nothing on it looks minimal and a page with nothing on it is just empty. The difference is whether what remains is deliberate.
It suits writers, designers, consultants and anybody whose work is the point. If that is not you, the recipe still works; it just means you are picking a look rather than matching one.

- Outline buttons, not filled. A filled button shouts. An outline button says "this is tappable" and then gets out of the way, which is the whole posture of this style. It is the single setting that does the most work here.
- Small radius, not pill-shaped. Fully rounded buttons read as friendly and app-like. Minimal wants square-ish corners, which read as considered. Small rather than none, because zero radius on a phone reads as unfinished rather than austere.
- Five links, maximum. This is the rule that makes the style work and the one people skip. Minimal typography around fourteen links is not a minimal page, it is a tidy list. If you cannot get below six, this is the wrong style for you.
- One accent, or none. Near-black text on near-white, and at most one colour, used once. Two accents in a minimal palette immediately reads as a template.
And then the part styling cannot fix
Every style on this site is a decision about how the page looks. The order of what is on it is a separate decision, it matters more, and it is the one nobody revisits. A beautifully styled page with the wrong thing at the top is still a page with the wrong thing at the top.
The way this one goes wrong
Using a pure #FFFFFF background with pure #000000 text. It is the highest contrast available and it looks cheap, because nothing physical is that white or that black. The off-white and near-black above are what make it read as designed rather than defaulted.
What this page says, in six lines
- Outline buttons, not filled.
- Small radius, not pill-shaped.
- Every colour above clears 4.5:1, so nothing gets corrected after you save.
- Styling is the smaller half. What is at the top of the page matters more.
