The dead links in your bio

Bio pages rot faster than websites, and almost nobody checks. The links that break are usually the ones you added for a campaign and stopped thinking about, which means the failure is invisible to you and obvious to everyone else. This is how the rot happens, how to find it, and how to stop finding out from a follower.

Soft failures, where the page still loads but the content is gone or the offer has expired, are more common and invisible to link checkers, so watch for links that get views and almost no clicks. What a dead link actually costs

The intuitive model is that a broken link costs you one click. The real cost is larger and it compounds in three directions.

First, the wasted tap. Everything upstream of that click cost you something: the video, the caption, the profile visit, the decision to tap. A dead link throws away the entire funnel at the last step, which is the most expensive place to lose somebody.

Second, the trust damage. A visitor who taps a dead link learns that this page is not looked after. The rational response is to stop tapping, so the failure of one link suppresses the others. This is why a page with one dead link often performs worse than a page with one fewer link.

Third, the professional cost. If a brand partner, a sponsor, or a potential client taps a dead link, the message is not "this URL moved," it is "this person does not maintain their own storefront." For creators pitching sponsors, that is the single most avoidable own goal available.

Why bio pages rot faster than websites

Link rot affects every collection of links, but bio pages are unusually exposed because of what they contain.

  • Most links are time-limited by design. A launch, a discount code, a presave, a tour date, an episode, a webinar. Each one has a built-in expiry, and the page has no idea when it passes.
  • They point at platforms you do not control. Videos get deleted, shops get restructured, event pages come down the day after, and social handles change.
  • They accumulate. Adding a link is easy and removing one requires remembering it exists. Pages grow monotonically.
  • Nobody visits their own page. You edit it in a dashboard. You almost never open it as a visitor, which is the only way you would notice.
  • Shorteners die. A link routed through a URL shortener inherits that shortener's mortality, and several popular ones have shut down or restricted free tiers over the years, taking every link with them.

The combination is a page whose links are individually fragile, collectively growing, and never inspected. It is a strong argument for keeping the page short, which is the same conclusion the ordering guide reaches from a completely different direction.

Three of the four return a perfectly healthy 200. That is why "we check your links" is a much weaker feature than it sounds, and why link checkers alone give you false confidence. The failure modes that cost the most are precisely the ones a status check cannot see.

The behavioural signature

What all four have in common is the shape they leave in your data: views without clicks. A link that is shown hundreds of times and tapped almost never is failing, whether it is broken, expired, or simply no longer interesting. And a link whose click-through rate declines steadily over several weeks is decaying, even if nothing about it has technically broken.

That is a much better detector than a status code, because it works regardless of the reason. It is also why this problem is fundamentally an analytics problem rather than a crawling problem, and why almost no product in this category addresses it: most of them cannot see per-link click-through at all.

Finding the dead links you already have

Do this once, properly, and then adopt the prevention habits below.

  1. Open your page in a private window on a phone. Not the editor preview. The real page, logged out, on mobile data.
  2. Tap every link. All of them, including the ones you are sure are fine. Those are the ones that are broken.
  3. For each destination, ask whether it still delivers the promise on the label. Not whether it loads. Whether the thing your label said is on that page.
  4. Check anything routed through a shortener twice. Shorteners fail silently and are the most common source of surprise breakage.
  5. Sort your links by click-through rate. Anything with real views and almost no clicks goes on the suspect list even if it resolves fine.
  6. Fix, archive, or reschedule each one. Archive rather than delete, so you can bring seasonal links back without rebuilding them.

Preventing the next round

Schedule anything with an end date

If a link is for an event, an offer, or a launch, it should have an expiry set the day you create it, while you still remember when it ends. Point at things you control

A link to your own site outlives a link to a platform page. When you must link to a platform, prefer the stable URL: a channel rather than a specific video, a shop rather than a single product, a profile rather than a post.

Avoid unnecessary hops

Every redirect is another thing that can fail, and shorteners in particular are a dependency on somebody else's business model. If you need tracking, use UTM parameters on the destination URL rather than a shortener in front of it. The Instagram guide has a ready-made scheme.

Use a custom domain

This one protects the other direction. A custom domain means your bio page URL survives you changing tools, and every post you have ever published pointing at it keeps working. Without one, your entire back catalogue of "link in bio" references depends on a company you do not control staying in business. That is the strongest practical argument for a custom domain and it has nothing to do with branding.

Keep the page short

Fewer links means fewer things that can rot, and a page you can audit in five minutes is a page you will actually audit.

Detecting rot automatically

Everything above is manual, which means it depends on discipline nobody sustains. Two kinds of automation help, and they catch different things.

Status checking

A background job that requests each destination and flags non-200 responses. Cheap, reliable, and limited to the one failure mode that is already the easiest to spot. Worth having, not worth trusting alone.

Behavioural detection

Watching the event stream your own page produces, and flagging the patterns that indicate a link has stopped working in the sense that matters:

  • Dead: substantial views, essentially no clicks, sustained over a meaningful window.
  • Decaying: click-through rate sliding consistently over several weeks against the link's own history.
  • Buried: a link with a strong rate stuck in a position where almost nobody sees it, which is the opposite failure and just as expensive.

How do I check for broken links in my bio?

Open your page in a private browser window on a phone and tap every link, including the ones you never think about. That catches hard failures. What is link rot?

Does a broken link hurt my page?

It costs more than a missing link. A missing link never gets tapped. A broken link consumes a tap you worked to earn, returns nothing, and teaches the visitor that the page is not maintained, which suppresses their willingness to try the other links on it.

Why does a link show 200 OK but still be dead?

Because plenty of sites answer a request for missing content with a real page rather than an error. A deleted product might redirect to a shop homepage, a removed video might show a "video unavailable" page, and both return 200. Automated checkers see a healthy response. Visitors see nothing they were promised. This is called a soft 404.

How can analytics find dead links that checkers miss?

By watching behaviour instead of HTTP status. A link that gets plenty of page views and almost no clicks over a sustained period is failing regardless of what its status code says, and a link whose click-through rate slides steadily for weeks is decaying. Neither pattern requires fetching the destination at all.
